I am told that using the first part of this recipe also works for Fedora 21 with xfce
Using the fixed font on Fedora 14 takes a little more effort than the method described by Dave Fumberger
First, the relevant font rpm is not installed by default, so we need to install it
sudo yum install xorg-x11-fonts-misc
Second, in addition to accepting family fixed, we need to search the appropriate directory, so our ~/.fonts.conf file needs to look like this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<dir>/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc</dir>
<selectfont>
<acceptfont>
<pattern>
<patelt name="family">
<string>fixed</string>
</patelt>
</pattern>
</acceptfont>
</selectfont>
</fontconfig>
after that, run
fc-cache -fv
to make the fonts available to gnome. You may need to log out and log in again before they are visible in menus, but I don’t think it’s necessary to run fc-cache as root unless you are doing this for all users, in which case the .fonts.conf should go in /etc/fonts/conf.d
Finally, select Edit ⇒ Profile Preferences in gnome-terminal and use the Font widget to select Family: Fixed, Style: SemiCondensed, Size: 10.
